The Running Man: Glen Powell Leads Explosive and Gritty Remake from Edgar Wright

Glen Powell is officially on the run.

Paramount Pictures has dropped the adrenaline-pumping first trailer for The Running Man, the highly anticipated film adaptation of Stephen King’s 1982 dystopian novel. Directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Baby Driver), the movie stars Powell as Ben Richards — a working-class father forced to enter a deadly televised game show in a desperate bid to save his sick daughter.

Not Just a Remake

While The Running Man was first adapted into a 1987 cult classic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, director Edgar Wright has emphasized that this new version is not a remake, but rather a more faithful adaptation of King’s original novel.

“The real story of the book has never been told as written,” Wright said at CinemaCon. “I love the original ’80s movie, but it’s a very loose adaptation of Stephen King’s book, and I was a fan of the book.”

Glen Powell, 36, known for his recent performance in Twisters, confirmed that Schwarzenegger gave his blessing for the new take on the story. In an interview with People magazine, Powell called the upcoming film “maniacal” and said it delivers “everything fans of the genre want — and more.”

What Is The Running Man About?

Set in a near-future dystopia, The Running Man centers around the most-watched television show in the nation — a lethal competition in which “Runners” must survive for 30 days while being hunted by trained killers. With each day survived, the cash prize increases — but so does the danger.

“Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is convinced by the show’s charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort,” reads the official synopsis.

“But Ben’s defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite — and a threat to the entire system. As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger, and Ben must outwit not just the Hunters, but a nation addicted to watching him fall.”

The trailer, released July 1, offers a pulse-pounding glimpse into the action, with Powell’s Ben Richards leaping from explosions, evading Hunters, and yelling at the camera: “Stop filming me!”
