Renowned Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, known for his perfectionist approach, had auditioned for the role of Sub-Inspector Shyam Manohar in Kiran Rao’s latest directorial venture, Laapataa Ladies. However, the role eventually went to veteran actor Ravi Kishan.

Speaking about the decision, Kiran Rao revealed that while Aamir performed well in his audition, his star image could have overshadowed the character’s impact. She emphasized that the film’s narrative required a fresh appeal and an element of unpredictability, which Ravi Kishan was able to deliver effectively.

Laapataa Ladies, set in rural India in 2001, follows the story of two young brides who get separated during a train journey, with the police officer Shyam Manohar playing a crucial role in the unfolding events. The film, backed by Aamir Khan Productions and Jio Studios, has been widely praised, even receiving a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Kiran Rao further shared that Aamir had been involved with the project since its early stages, having first come across the script during a screenwriting competition in 2018. While he was enthusiastic about the film, he ultimately supported the choice of casting fresh and unexpected talent in key roles.

Despite missing out on the role, Aamir Khan remains a driving force behind the project as a producer alongside Jyoti Deshpande. The film, featuring actors like Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastav, and Nitanshi Goel, is set for a theatrical release on March 1
